Okay, for Nscopex and Idbeholda, I wrote database connectivity, with an Access and/or Oracle Database, making a user login. Also, a user has a status of 1 or 2, 1 means he is active, 2 means he is inactive, when he signs on, he will get the status of 1 in the Database, also I added IP and Hostname tracking, whenever you sign on, it is entered into the database with your IP and Hostname. I also added a Ban feature on the server side of the messenger. What happens is, when you click ban, it kicks the user off of the server, and marks them as banned in the database, so when they goto sign back on, they get a message telling them that they have been banned.
And who says I am not a team player.

If you need constant, good connection, I have cable that runs @ 2500kbps on average.

I am now working on an Administrative Client program version, and an Unban feature through a textbox, that will search through the database and if the record is found and marked ban, it will unban it.

It is going to be hosted at my friends house, since he has a webserver, because I need the database to be on the webserver (it will be secured) and that is how the client will connect through the databse, otherwise you would not be able to login, because it would be searching the clients computer for the database and you wouldnt have it.

Okay, I fixed the issue with the database connectivity through the internet, My rendition of this program now works flawlessly.

SQL is a database management language. I'll let you draw your own conclusions from that.

Im having a problem, and it is kind of major... I was always testing at the same location of the db, so I went to a different computer and tried it, and it said the DB was in an invalid path. This is because I specified an HTTP address in the DataSource in the Formload, and in the Connection in the DataEnvironment, any ways on how I can connect to the Database at my buddies house and pull the values in without getting that error?

You know that is exactly why everyone knows a programming team wouldn't work out, Pugamsish you dont know for sure that you are smarter then, honestly it doesn't matter who is smarter.
What is the Limpkinw programming team making/designing?
How many people are in the programming team
How far along are you, how many people has helped?
A lot of questions I am curious about...

I'm not going to lie. I don't know. What I would do is go to an opensource vb site like vbcode.com or freevbcode.com and see what makes theirs work. Also when it came to password access and ****, i planned on making an encrypted list that would be downloaded from the server each time a username was entered to check to see if each individual password was correct. But that's just me... My mind functions on a slightly more ****ed up level than most people... heh.

The team is making a LW.Com messenger, that uses its own server, and Database.
6 people are on the team, The members are: Pugamsish, Monte, Idbeholda, Nscopex, Konfuseded, LimpkinW
Everyone except konfuseded is working on this that I know of. We are almost complete, all we need is to finish up one problem. The Datasource and connection MUST be a file, it can't be an HTTP requested DB. Which is where we are stuck, because we are wondering how we can check the UserIDs and Password.
And Leb, noone said you were the best. Trust me. I have seen your programs, you are nowhere near it.
Wood, my IQ is 159, Im just guessing that I am smarter.
Also Leb, The reason not many of you have heard of my programs is because I don't write them for stupid yahoo kids. I wrote a Netsender, which allows people to talk on networks with domains. I wrote an Online Bookstore in Java, and an Inventory Management System for it in VB, I wrote a Database management system and User Registration software for Databases, I wrote a Library Transaction Wizard, I wrote a program for the college that keeps track of users in computer labs, and monitors if they are doing anything wrong (like cheating on tests). My programs make me money.

I don't mean to start anything with you, pug, but the idea of the "intelligence quotient" is complete bull****. There are exceptions. It's not about how much you measure your mind.. it's about how you use it (and I have met people who supposedly make the "high intelligence" claim but still qualify as complete dumbasses and/or borderline pathological liars).... and I think both of you bringing up the whole "let's see who's smarter" shouting match is retarded.
For the rest of you who will make some response about me making this comment? I as well have taken the IQ test... scored 138 on it, hung over, and half awake... and I thought it was bull**** then, and I still think it's bull**** now.
yea really anyways im smarter lol

Primarily, i plan to combine diff features of the one i'm working on and the one pug is going to send me. I also plan on optimizing code routines (elimination of duplicate routines and putting them in a .bas module), and also on compiled file size.

true, but you need to know the password, and if you don't have it, you'll get kicked off by the server anyway lol.

Not using a database could spell trouble, there are numerous exploits for that. With the database you can specify EASIER the values and conditions.
Idbeholda
07-31-2003, 09:45 PM
My idea technically was a database. It pretty much was a straight handle/password list. When a user was either logged on, logging in, or using a feature, it would send a packet with the handle name and the password. If the password was correct (somehow, it was working on the comp i was on, but when i get it back, i'll try to fix some of the bugs that you came across), it would let them on. If it was incorrect, it would send them a packet stating they had an invalid password. Even still regardless of how a database is set up, it can still be exploited if someone with malicious intent knows how to login to the server, and what values to get.
In theory, I could use a third party encryption (that includes custom) modules to encrypt the database/list, then use another module to compress it on top of that. But regardless of what is used, once again in theory, through trial and error, or even decompilation of a program or hex editing, one can find the destination of the database, find a way to download it and/or access it, and exploit it. That is why I still stick with my idea of having a SERVER side supported login and not a client side login that allows the user direct access to the database. Think total, paranoid, avoid-the-worst-case-scenario-at-all-possible-costs security, my friend. It's saved me a lot of pain in the past.
