I'm pretty sure this is the wrong place to be posting this but I just couldn't find any other appropiate place so I just picked this one. Anyway, I am drinking a cup of coffee as I post this.

Here is a problem that I have.......

I just set up a LAN between a Windows 2000 system (just put it up yesterday) and a Windows 98 system (it's been around along time).

Now, from the Windows 2000 PC it can 'see' everything on the Windows 98 PC and it can access all the drives, folders, files, etc.

On the Windows 98 PC it can 'see' the Windows 2000 PC but I cannot get to any drive, folder, or file. Why? Because it keeps asking me for a password in order to connect to the network.

Damn, I have no idea whatsoever what the password is. I have tried every password that I can think of that I may have setup somewhere in the past but none of them are valid. So now I have these questions:

1) Is there anyway around this 'password' thing?
2) Is there a way to remove it from the system and create a new password setup?
3) Is there a way to 'crack' the existing password so I will know what it is?

If possible, I would rather not re-install Windows 98 but if that is the only answer then I will do it.

Alright, If yah know me then you know I haven't been around much so this might not work I'm out of practice. On the 2000 box is it win 2000 pro? If so signon as an admin id on that box go to cntrl panel get into admin tools and set set up a pssw and id through "Local Security Policy" should fall under remote host, Set up a user id and pssw you shouldn't be able to log in unless you do there isnot a defult user for networking into win 2000 pro.

Or.... Since its most likely using The File Sharing Client, you can use PQWACK I think its called, It's a file sharing (port 139) Brute Force password cracker.

Yeah, that's all you need to do....set up user ID and password but you can do it through "Users and Passwords" in Control Panel. Anyway, thanks, your advice got me on the right track

It is 2000 Professional and believe me it's in Users and Passwords because that is where I went and added a user and password...then that same user logs onto Windows 98 and wamo.....there it is.....total access to all resources on Windows 2000. I'm not saying you cant do it through policy but I am saying that you don't need to do it there because it works just like I said
by using Users and Passwords in Control Panel.
