This appears to be a Windows 2000 Pro (and probably an XP) problem. I am running Windows 2000 Pro and always I get this damn svchost.exe problem and will be shut down error message. After I have to close the application it appears that from that point on I cannot do any drag/drops, go to certain web sites, unable to display the status of several programs, etc. etc. Also, I am unable to disconnect from the Internet and many times I have Email problems like my POP3 host cannot be found.

Once I reboot everything works again the way they are supposed to work then in a few minutes I will get this svchost.exe problem again and the bull **** starts over again.

Someone told me that I have a virus but I don't think thats the reason because this problem started right after I installed Windows 2000 on a new hard drive and before I even ever connected to the Internet.

Has anyone with Windows 2000 Pro have or had this problem or any problem with svchost.exe? Does anyone know what can be done about it?

Any and all help will be highly appreciated.

I've had your exact problem and it was caused by a virus but after reformatting it went away. Sounds like you have some program that keeps messing it up that is doing it. I really don't know any way of fixing it besides deleting the file.

Well, one of the things that I tried was deleting the file. I had to delete it from the DOS mode because Windows wont let you.

So, after I deleted it, then when I rebooted Windows 2000 I wasn't able to connect to the Internet amoung other things. So, I had to put it back in the system32 directory.

Wasn't sure if it would work. I really did have that problem before but like I said the reformatting fixed it. Go to www.pcpitstop.com and see if you can run a scan on your computer and find out what problems it's picking up.
