OK, I just put in a brand new hard drive on my PC. Placed the Windows 98 CD in the CD-ROM drive and installed Windows 98 onto the new hard drive. After the installation was completed Windows 98 was booted up from the new hard drive but after it came up it could not "see" the CD-ROM drive.
If I am able to install Windows 98 from the CD-ROM drive then why can't it detect it's presence once the system is booted up?
Anyone have an answer to this? Am I doing something wrong?

Get the right drivers.

Get the right drivers.
So, are you saying that during the install from the CD-ROM drive the installation program can access the CD-ROM drive (it has the correct driver already) but later during Windows startup that driver is no longer available?
Also, since the CD-ROM came with the PC I do not have the driver for that model and I always though that Windows had generic drivers that it could use instead of the manufacturer's drivers. After all, this is just an ordinary run of the mill CD-ROM drive so I would have thought that a generic driver would do just fine.
I believe you about getting the right driver it's just that this doesn't make any sense to me since I had no problem installing Windows 2000 earlier on the same PC and it was able to access the CD-ROM drive.
Well, I suppose that I could go to the Internet and search for the driver for that particular CD-ROM drive.

you gotta get the driver.. there is no alternative unless you know which generic it is? right click my computer--> properties ---> device mgr.. somethign along those lines to get there but you can update druivers to ageneric from there if you find the right generic

Yeah Kane is right you have to go to Device Manager and find the right thing then search for the drivers. Personally I wouldn't us 98 b/c Microsoft is going to stop supporting 98 and 2000 after this year is over then you won't be able to find any drivers unless you get lucky.

Just to respond to your question.....the CD-ROM is jumpered for Secondary/Slave which always worked in the past.
However, the problem has been resolved and I want to thank those who suggested that I need to get the correct driver. I went to the manufactor's Web Site and downloaded the driver for my particular model. After installing the driver and then re-booting the CD-ROM Drive is now visible and works with the operating system.
